Dr Engard’s experience with medicine and the healing arts spans over 20 years. Her recent graduation from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in July 2004 is just the culmination of many years of study in the Holistic Arts. Her pursuit of Naturopathic Medicine began while she was an undergraduate student at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. This is where she began her Botanical apprenticeships, which include post-graduate studies in Botany at Cornell University’s Agricultural Station as well as private apprenticeships with local herbalists. She went on to receive an AS and a BFA from RIT in Fine and Applied Graphic Arts in 1985 and 1987 respectively. She continued to pursue her Botanical Medicine studies with further apprenticeships in Boulder, Colorado in 1989-90 as production manager for Wish Garden Herbs and with the Gold Canyon School, which was the foundation program for the Boulder Institute of Botanical Medicine. She became introduced to Naturopathic Medicine in 1992 and attended National College of Naturopathic Medicine in 1994-5 after completing her pre-med studies at Portland College in Portland, OR with a major in Chemistry (BS-eq). She was also eligible for her certification in Massage Therapy with concurrent studies in Shiatsu and Acupressure while in Portland. After moving back to Colorado in 1995, she started Wildwoods Natural Products, a botanical medicine company she still manages today. The business was also a Natural Medicinary (retail) and developed into a Botanical and Nutritional counseling practice, which included homoeopathy, hydrotherapy, acupressure/shiatsu and essential oil therapies. Her clinical experience in Natural Medicine was exemplified by her studies/work in Emergency Medicine and Cardio and Pulmonary therapy. She received her Respiratory Therapy degree (CRT) in 1998, and EMT/Paramedic degrees in 1996-1999.
She continues to apply her extensive experience in Naturopathic therapies with her continuing clinical experience in allopathic/conventional medicine by working in Banner Mesa Medical Center here in the Phoenix area. She is currently in the process of completing her Masters degree in Acupuncture at the Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture. Her interest in Chinese Medicine is continually cultivated by her personal studies in traditional Qi Gong meditation and healing arts. Her medical interests include Auto-immune diseases, Pain management and Endocrinology as well as General/Women’s medicine. She believes in the Naturopathic philosophy of treating the whole person, and commitment to finding the cause in the disease process. She looks forward to continuing her life path of healing at the Red Mountain Naturopathic Healthcare Clinic.
